چکیده

To improve efficiency of fuel cells working on the proton exchange membrane principle, which are currently being developed for automotive applications, a supply of pressurized air at about 3 bars abs is required. This is expelled in the reaction products, mainly as water and nitrogen, at approximately 100C. The power input required to compress the air consumes approximately 20% of the cell electrical output. To recover a part of the compressor power and to extract water, the reaction products must be expanded. It is shown that a twin screw machine can perform both the compression and expansion functions using only one pair of rotors. Moreover, by proper location of the ports, mechanical friction losses within it will be less than if the two functions are performed in separate machines.

Exergy Analysis of a Molten Carbonate Fuel Cell-Turbo Expander-Steam Turbine Hybrid Cycle

Exergy analysis of an integrated molten carbonate fuel cell-turbo expander-steam turbine hybrid cycle has been presented in this study. The proposed cycle has been used as a sustainable energy approach to provide a micro hybrid power plant with high exergy efficiency. To generate electricity by the mentioned system, an externally reformed molten carbonate fuel cell located upstream of the combi...

Multifunctional Screw Compressor Rotors

For many years the authors have been investigating the use of twin screw machines to fulfil both the expansion and compression. One of potential advantages of screw machines over other types of positive displacement machine is their ability to perform both the compression and expansion functions simultaneously, using only one pair of rotors. A further feature is the use of the rotors which seal...

Introduction of the Novel Cross Vane Expander-Compressor Unit for Vapour Compression Cycle

A new type of expander-compressor system called Cross Vane expander-compressor (CVEC) was introduced. This device replaces the expansion valve and compressor in conventional refrigeration systems to reduce the energy consumption and improve the coefficient of performance (COP) of the system. As opposed to many expander-compressor systems in the literature, whereby a separated expander is couple...

Combined Optimal Design and Control of a near Isothermal Liquid Piston Air Compressor/expander for a Compressed Air Energy Storage (caes) System for Wind Turbines

The key component of Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) system is an air compressor/expander. The roundtrip efficiency of this energy storage technology depends greatly on the efficiency of the air compressor/expander. There is a trade off between the thermal efficiency and power density of this component. Different ideas and approaches were introduced and studied in the previous works to imp...

Numerical simulation of combined screw compressor-expander machines for use in high pressure refrigeration systems

Recent interest in natural refrigerants has created a new impetus for studies of CO2 as a working fluid in vapour compression systems for refrigeration and air conditioning. Two major drawbacks to its use are the very high pressure differences required across the compressor and the large efficiency losses associated with the throttling process. One of potential advantages of screw machines over...
